H. Patrick Swygert is the 15th president of Howard University and the fifth African American to serve as Howard University's chief executive officer.

Prior to his current position, Mr. Swygert was president of the University of Albany, State University of New York. Before that, Mr. Swygert was associated with Temple University beginning in 1972, when he was appointed to the faculty of Temple University Law School where he served as acting dean in 1977. From 1980 to 1982 he served as special counsel to the University's president and from 1982 to 1987, he served as vice president for university administration. In 1987, he was named executive vice president of Temple University.

In addition, Mr. Swygert has served as a visiting professor at the Tel Aviv University Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, and has lectured in Egypt, Greece and Italy. He is also the author of numerous articles and publications on higher education and law. Mr. Swygert has a long history of civil service, including serving as general counsel to the U.S. Civil Service Commission.

Mr. Swygert serves as chair of the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area, and is a member of the board of the Federal City Council and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. He is a trustee of the Institute of Public Administration in New York. In addition, Mr. Swygert is a member of the board of directors of The Victory Fund of Cleveland, Ohio, the Hartford Financial Services Group, Inc., and the Hartford Life Insurance Co.

Previously, Mr. Swygert served as chair of the New York Special Commission on Educational Structure, Policies and Practices and as a member of the American Council on Education's Commission on Women in Higher Education.

Mr. Swygert has received numerous awards and honors including honorary membership in the Golden Key National Honorary Society; the Outstanding Educator Award from the New York State Black and Puerto Rican Legislative Caucus; the Tree of Life Award from the the Jewish National Fund; the Frederick Douglass Society Freedom Fighter Award; and the Distinguished Postgraduate Achievement Award in the Fields of Law and Public Service from Howard University.

Mr. Swygert is an alumnus of Howard University, earning both his undergraduate degree and law degree from the University. He is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Bar and the State of New York Bar. A native of Philadelphia, Mr. Swygert and his wife, Sonja, have two sons.
